“What? It’s not what it looks like?” Walter sighed and looked at Patrick. “Now
would be a good time to get out of my daughter’s bed.”
Patrick sat up quickly. “Um… can you turn around?” he asked, leaning over Kat to get his boxers off the floor.
Walter rolled his eyes and faced the wall as he got dressed.
“Thanks,” he said, pulling his jeans on as Walter turned around again. Patrick stood next to Kat’s bed, her clothes and his shirt still at his feet.
Walter rolled his eyes. “Maybe you should leave.”
“I think that’s up to Kat to decide.”
They both looked at Kat, who rolled her eyes. “You should leave,” she mumbled, picking at a spot on her bedsheet.
He nodded and picked up his shirt, then grabbed his jacket off her desk chair. “I know you don’t like me,” he said, facing Walter. “But aren’t you at least happy that she was with a guy who really cares about her?” Walter rolled his eyes. “Who loves her,” he continued, prompting a light gasp from Kat that he ignored.
Walter looked over Patrick’s shoulder to his daughter, who was sitting in her bed, staring at Patrick’s back. “Just leave,” he said, shaking his head.
He nodded, turning back to Kat. He slowly walked over to her and kissed her softly. “I’ll see you…” he began, but Walter cleared his throat. “I’ll call you later.”
He walked back toward the door, stopping again next to Walter. “I would never hurt her,” he said softly before continuing into the hall.
